More than a year after some of the country's largest banks were castigated for foreclosing on homes owned by active-duty members of the military, a local Navy petty officer still believes he is not being protected under the law.
Wells Fargo obtained a final judgment of foreclosure against 30-year-old Tyrone Johnson last August — something his attorney claims violates the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
"There are extra steps a bank is supposed to go through before they even begin a foreclosure proceeding," said Trent Steele, a Hobe Sound attorney representing Johnson.
He doesn't believe Wells Fargo and its law firm, Florida Default Law Group, took those steps when they went after the eastern Port St. Lucie home Johnson bought for $190,500.
